Concreting Procedures – What to Expect

All you need to know about your concrete installation

STAGE 1:

Excavation, Boxing up, Crushed Rock and Reinforcement Mesh installation. Your site will be excavated and any excess soil is removed. Timber form work will also be laid around the area to be concreted. Steel mesh will then be placed within the area to be concreted. Any drainage requirements are also completed at this stage. The time frame on for this stage depends on the size of your job.

STAGE 2:

Concrete installation -The concrete will be barrowed, pumped or spat into position to be spread, screeded and edged all in one day. Excess
concrete maybe left on site but will be removed prior to sealing.

STAGE 3:

Exposing of Aggregate – (Only applies to Exposed Aggregate Concrete) The concrete will be left to cure overnight and then be cleaned off using a high pressure cleaner exposing the aggregate. This process can be quite lengthy and extremely messy leaving a slurry residue on the surrounding areas. All care will be taken in cleaning down any walls, fences and surrounds to the best of our ability, extra cleaning will be required but this will be the owners’ responsibility. Any damage to internal floors etc. from water going under external doors or in closed windows in the process of high pressure cleaning the surrounding area will not be the responsibility of In2 gardens. We recommend placing a towel under the door or windows to catch any water that may pass through.

STAGE 4:

Cutting of Expansion Joints -The cutting of expansion joints “Control joints” are cut the either the same day as exposing the aggregate or up to 5 days after the pouring of the concrete depending on the weather conditions and the mix chosen. Control Joints are a necessary part of concrete and help allow your concrete movement. Cuts are placed in the areas that have a high potential to crack and generally every three lineal meters of concrete. Minor chipping can occur along the cut lines this is the nature of the product. After the Cutting has been completed we then do a final Acid wash and high pressure clean of the concrete and surrounding areas. It is the responsibility of the owner to ensure the concreted area stays clean prior to sealing. If the area is required to be cleaned again an extra charge of $300 will be incurred. DO NOT walk on the area with Shoes or attempt to drive vehicles on the area.

The reason for cutting is to catch the cracks which would have otherwise occurred at these points. Please note, although the concrete has been cut it does not completely eliminate the chance of other cracks appearing in the concrete due to unforeseen circumstances such as weather, etc.

STAGE 5:

Sealing – Sealing your concrete is a process that will enhance the colour of your concrete giving it a glossy shine, but its benefits are in protecting your concrete from external stains associated with dirt, oil and grime. Sealing your concrete can only happen when the concrete has completely dried from the cutting and cleaning stage. Sealing may happen on the same day as cutting and cleaning or in the following days, depending on when it is dry. It is necessary that the concrete remains completely clean until the sealing stage as the concrete sealer cannot be applied over a dirty surface. Once we have left the job site it is your responsibility to ensure that the concrete remains clean of any dirt what so ever (leaves are fine and we can remove these prior to sealing). If the concrete is found to need re cleaning for any reason, an additional cleaning fee of $300 will apply. DO NOT walk on the area with Shoes or attempt to drive vehicles on the area prior to job completion.

Concrete sealer is applied by a roller. The sealing process involves the application of 2 coats of sealer. Both coats are applied on the same day and do omit a strong odour. Once the sealer has been applied, it must not be walked on for a period of at least 3 hours and must not be driven on for at least 3 days following the application of sealer and for at least 7 days from the time the concrete was poured in order to ensure the concrete has cured.

OTHER INFORMATION:

  • We require access inside garages in all stages of the process except for sealing.
  • We require access to power and water on site.
  • We recommend that all Exposed Aggregate areas with drains are cleaned out by a plumber using a turbo nozzle drain cleaner a week after the sealing is completed. This ensures no slurry is left in drains and the sealer has had time to cure before plumber does any work.
  • While we ensure we do our best to limit and any concrete residue from going down the drainage system we cannot guarantee it.
    During the concrete pouring, concrete cleaning and the concrete cutting stages concrete dust is created. Concrete dust and slurry may still be visible on surrounding surfaces after the cleaning process has been completed. This is due to the nature of the material itself and should be anticipated on all concrete work.
  • Iron Stone secretion – on some occasions iron stone gets through the screening process and creates a brown secretion stain. You need to find the stone and remove it and clean the area with CLR which can be found in automotive shops or Bunnings.
